Leptin, the product of the obese gene (ob), is a hormone secreted by adipocytes. Administration of recombinant mouse leptin in ob/ob mice - homozygous ob mutants suffering from obesity - corrected both overeating and obesity. After central administration of this leptin fragment by feeding in the rat inhibition of food intake was observed. Leptin (22-56) depolarized rat hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus neurons. This leptin fragment was shown to enhance the proliferative activity of both the normal myometrium and myoma cells in primary culture.
